Following Directions

I helped out in the Memorial Library today because a class was visiting. They were going to see the whole library, but spend half an hour in the Memorial Library learning about WWII airplanes and making paper airplanes. They are learning about planes in school right now. They are also learning about following a set of instructions, so the directions we had for a specific paper airplane worked out well. I'll be going in again the next two days to do the same thing!

I did some more work on the website today. Starting fresh helped. Here is my problem:

For simple stuff I can find really straightforward instructions. How do you change the background color? There is a page in my book that tells you how to do exactly that. But now that I'm trying to do more complicated stuff, there aren't specific instructions. How do I get my YouTube video exactly where I want it on the screen without fixing it a certain distance from the edge? Turns out, it is possible but there isn't a page in the book on how to do it. There is a page in the book on how to give a division margins. I had to figure out myself that putting a large margin on just the left would move the video to the right of my navigation bar. I think the cavemen had it right. When you paint a buffalo on a certain spot on the wall, that buffalo is going to be on that spot on the wall. It doesn't need margins to make it stay there.

I Prefer Lanuages That Are For Speaking

Looking at my website can't fully convey they trouble I went through to get it to look like this.

Doesn't look that much different. But it's pretty much all I have done today. Not because I spent most of the day doing nothing. Because I spent hours changing between divs and tables and trying to get that YouTube video to go where I was telling it to go. I needed to know things that weren't in my book. I needed to know things John couldn't tell me how to do. I decided that I like this website.

I feel kind of fried. But the funny thing is that I haven't even made all the changes I want to make. There is more CSS in my future.

Joy.

Hibernating

I remember when, over the summers, as a child, once I got into a rhythm of sleeping when I was tired and waking up when I wasn't I would naturally wake up around 8 in the morning. Now I have to set an alarm to get myself up even when I don't have anything scheduled or I will practically sleep all day. I have decided that since I am in a colder climate my body is trying to hibernate.

Although I can turn into a bear in World of Warcraft, IRL I am NOT A BEAR. Do not be fooled.

In spite of oversleeping I did manage to update the website and write a book review.

Can bears do that?

That's what I thought.

Swans

I went into Thetford today for a volunteer meeting at Ancient House. The meeting started at the same time that the museum opened and since I was there half an hour early (due to the train schedule), I couldn't get in. So I went for a walk by the river. There were several swans in the river and I was impressed by how they could stay in one place if they wanted to even though the current seemed strong. As I walked along I came upon a pair of swans that decided to follow me. They just swam along beside me. And one swan let out a short "merp" every few seconds to make sure that I had noticed them. Alas, I did not have any food so my friends eventually lost interest.

On anther note, now that the website is up and running I have arranged for http://www.voxfabularum.com to be the home address. If you have saved the address I was previously linking to, it will no longer work.

I've Got Style!

Well, I finally sat down and made the style sheet for the website today. Now I've got font, color, and fun times with the links. I also added that icon that shows up in the address bar, but not on the style sheet. I had to put that on every page. I suppose I'll keep tweaking the site as I learn how to do fancier stuff, but it is more or less done for now.

That's pretty much all I've done today. But here is a random picture I took for Amanda of the panda on the side of the tobacco shop.

Breaking News

I moved my office back downstairs!

Now that we have a space heater the lower floor is much warmer. And it is pretty easy to move the space heater from the living room into my office if I need a little extra warmth.

I claimed the floral bowl chair because no one used it in the living room and it is comfy.

And I have lots of desk space to eat yogurt and look at my reference book while working on the website.

Yes, those are more working links!

No, the site won't always be black and white!

Making a Website

So, I spent some hours today working on the website. You can see the under construction version of it here. I still need to make the rest of the pages and make a style sheet for the whole site.

Not only did I learn how to do things like line up text on opposite sides of the page and how to embed the YouTube video (you can't just use the code YouTube gives you, apparently), but I also learned that John is really intense when he plays World of Warcraft by himself.

I actually did the website construction on my own with support from John when I had specific questions. But, so that I could have him nearby, he let me use the spare desk in his room. (The one I use when we play WoW together.) I guess I had never been in the same room with him before when he was playing by himself and really getting into it.

Kind of scary.

New Skillz

John said he would make me a website. He already purchased the domain and everything.

But, when I started designing the website in my head, I realized that it would probably need to be updated regularly. And I wouldn't want to always have to bug John about doing it.

SO! I am going to help him make my website. I am going to learn new website design skillz. Then, I can maintain the website by myself.

And, you know, it might help me in my job, too. Librarian 2.0 should probably know how to make a website.

Now the question is: How many hours of John's instruction can I endure at one time?
And the answer is: I bought a book with words and pictures to help me! (To supplement John's instruction.)
